Selective attention in autism: choosing which information to attend to
Selective attention enables a person to concentrate on a voice, an image or a task whilst reducing interference from everything else. For some autistic people, sounds, movements or details that are irrelevant to the task continue to compete for attention and require additional effort.
This does not mean that they pay little attention or that every stimulus is perceived with equal intensity. Attention varies with the task, the environment, tiredness, interest and co-occurring conditions such as ADHD.
What selective attention does
At any moment, more information arrives than can be used at once. Selective attention helps a person choose what is needed and reduce the influence of everything else. It makes it possible to read a sentence despite the other words around it, listen to someone in a café or finish a task whilst another person moves nearby.
Selection involves more than looking at or listening to the correct target. A person also has to keep it as the priority, prevent other information from interrupting the task and return to the previous point after a distraction.
When secondary stimuli continue to compete
Autism research has found differences in filtering information, but results are not identical across tasks or people. In some visual experiments, autistic participants continued to process irrelevant stimuli after non-autistic participants had begun to ignore them. A large study of adults also found greater interference from items placed beside the target.
One proposed explanation is that some people process more perceptual information at the same time. This capacity can make it easier to detect a detail that others miss. It can also increase effort when many items compete and only one of them is useful.
It is not a general measure of the ability to pay attention
A person may concentrate deeply on one activity and still find it difficult to select the important information in a busy setting. They may also attend well in an orderly room and lose track in another room with conversations, lights, screens and movement.
The visible response can be mistaken for lack of interest. Someone may take longer to answer because they were separating a voice from noise, locating the exact point in an explanation or recovering the task after an interruption. Looking towards a movement or sound does not, by itself, show that the person has stopped listening.
How it may appear in everyday life
- Losing track of a conversation when several people are speaking.
- Taking longer to find an important instruction on a crowded page.
- Turning towards movements, lights or changes in the surroundings.
- Needing more time to return to a task after an interruption.
- Responding to secondary information and missing what others regarded as the main point.
- Detecting mistakes, changes or details that other people had not noticed.
None of these signs is specific to autism. They may also relate to ADHD, anxiety, lack of sleep, vision or hearing problems, comprehension difficulties or a poorly explained task.
Ways to reduce competition between stimuli
- Give one main instruction at a time and separate the steps.
- Highlight the information that is needed without filling the page with colours and markings.
- Avoid simultaneous conversations, music or unnecessary screens during an explanation.
- Say the person’s name and wait for their attention before beginning, without requiring eye contact.
- Repeat the main point and provide it in writing when useful.
- Allow time to respond and to find the previous point after an interruption.
- Offer a setting with fewer stimuli for tasks that demand substantial concentration.
The aim is not to make the person ignore everything around them. It is to reduce competing information and make it easier to recognise what is needed at that moment.
When to consider other causes
A difficulty that begins suddenly, increases markedly or occurs with pain, hearing loss, visual changes, dizziness or loss of skills needs medical assessment. When it occurs across settings and affects learning or daily life, an evaluation can help distinguish attention, language, hearing, vision, anxiety, sleep and other possible causes.
Frequently asked questions
Can someone concentrate for hours and still have selective-attention difficulties?
Yes. Sustaining attention on a preferred activity and filtering stimuli during a conversation or assigned task place different demands on attention. Performance also varies with the setting and tiredness.
Does it mean that every stimulus is perceived equally?
No. Some items may be more salient than others, and priorities may change from one moment to the next. Research describes differences in selection and interference, not an identical perception of everything.
Should the person be taught to ignore distractions?
Reducing avoidable stimuli and making the important information clear should come first. Attention strategies may be useful, but they should not replace adjustments when the environment creates unnecessary effort.
